Buwang ng Wika (Language Month)

Language Month is a festival in the Philippines that is held every August. This is an extended celebration of Language Week which was extended on January 15, 1997. Language Month is often celebrated in schools. In addition, many events are held to celebrate it, such as recitation, recital, slogan-making, essays reciting poems, dancing folk dances and singing folk songs. When we practice teaching there we come to enliven the event also with the teachers and students on that day the students and including the teaching staff who were taught there were wearing traditional clothes from the Philippines.on that day we used our country’s traditional clothes, batik. On That day the teaching and learning activities were stopped for a full day, in exchange for students, the students are being required to come to school to attend this event and celebrate the event.

Summary and Suggestions

Purposes of practicum

Objectives of the SEA-Teacher Program

With this program that provides opportunities for students to practice teaching in neighboring countries or those in Southeast Asia, it is expected that after that students can improve teaching skills, fluency in English and also pedagogic. Pedagogic cannot be learned simply by reading books about education, learning, students, etc. However, a compilation of experiences can be grown more and more in teaching both at own country and abroad.

learn how good teaching to be good teachers in their own country or abroad

In addition, students are also expected to be more active in using the international language, English as the language of instruction when accepting the SEA-Teacher program. Like it or not, you have to talk in English if you’re with strangers, so you can understand. The main thing to guarantee is that those who take part in this activity will feel that the knowledge they have had so far is nothing, because they will get a lot of knowledge while there even though only a relatively short time is 1 month.

one of the aims of the program is also to find or make friends with people where students are placed to know about the country, their culture, and history.
I got a really good friend. He is one of my buddies who accompanied me to where his name is Jose Jose Periol.

Its main purpose is teaching practice abroad but establishing friendships with people there is also necessary

Procedures of practicum

Our teaching practicum procedure starts from our introduction to the students in SLS then we are introduced to our mentor or supervisor teacher, we are treated very well by being given facilities in the form of space for ourselves for our convenience. after being introduced to our mentors, we were given a briefing and tips when we started teaching there, but following our practicum procedures, we were required to observe the school, students at the school and the way or style of our mentors to teach their students. after that, before teaching directly we are required to make lesson plans every time we want to teach and it must be shown to our respective mentors, if there are deficiencies in the lesson plan it will be corrected and re-revised until it is feasible. we observed and made our lesson plan for less than one week less national holidays. after observing and making our own lesson plan, we were allowed to teach.

Outcomes of practicum

Accurately recognize the physical, administrative, social and psychological school where teaching practice.
Mastering a variety of teaching skills. especially in visual aids. know the shortcomings in teaching.
knowing or being directly involved with the teaching world is not just theory,
Apply various teacher professional abilities in their entirety and integrated into real situations.
Able to develop personal and social aspects in the social environment of the school.
Draw conclusions about the educational value of the experience and experience during the training through the reflection in the form of reports, namely blogs.

The challenges of practicum

the thing that most challenged me when teaching in SLS was when I had to make a learning material with simple tools. Even though in this school there are many LCD projectors, my mentor challenges me to make material teaching with tools that do not depend on technologists like LCD projectors, so I make a lot of learning material from Cartolina paper or from Manila paper so that in the future when I teach in schools Inadequate, I can improvise with improvised tools.
The next thing that makes me stressed is when my students don’t pay attention to me when teaching, this is a problem that is experienced by all teachers around the world. question them and point my students randomly so that when I appoint one of them and this student doesn’t know the answer he will get my punishment, and that law is that I tell my students to stand for five minutes. I do the same thing to students who are caught sleeping in class when I teach but sometimes I just order them to wash their faces so they are fresh again.maybe the way I deal with the challenges that I face is not the best but all the actions I have thought carefully what the impact on me and clearly I believe I have done the work or facing my problem well and it is evident from the comments given by my mentor he said that what I did when faced with the situation was good enough.

Overall impression

happy and grateful is a feeling that I feel overall. Why is that? because I’m glad to get new knowledge while there. secondly I am very thankful to the first God for giving this great opportunity to me and then I also do not forget those who have entrusted me to take part in the SEA Teacher Batch 8 program in BSU.

I am also very happy while there, I always get new friends who add new knowledge and information that is useful for me

Suggestions for future improvement

my message to SEAMEO to publish this event with a bigger scale or even more still why?, I think this program is not known to many universities in Indonesia. this is one of the very good programs held and it is a pity if there are still many universities in Southeast Asia not only in Indonesia do not know. If in the future this program is widely known then applicants or students who want to participate in this activity will be endowed and will increase the popularity of this program and also in the future the country to which students will become popular and good.
and also for the next batch to find out the weather situation that was there first because when I was there the grandchild was very extreme as rain was pouring on us almost every day and almost 24 hours we were struggling to wash there so if you like the weather when you come there you will prepare umbrella, boots, coat or jacket and others.

Teaching Practice

To be honest, this is my first time teaching at the junior high school level, before I had practiced teaching in my country in Indonesia but only was instructed to observe the school. I used to only teach elementary school children. Even so, I can deal with it. The difference here is only grade, although for the first time teaching in junior high school I can condition the class so that it is conducive because I am used to children who are super active when I teach in elementary school so I am used to it.

Procedures of teaching

On my first day of teaching, I teach about the narrative text about a story the hands of blacks.according to teaching procedures that are good and right, before teaching I have to prepare a lesson plan that has been corrected with my mentor and I have done that then I have also prepared my teaching materials apart from the textbook or modules namely cartolina paper, LCD projector and etc. I started the class by checking the presence first and then asking students if there were assignments, then asking again about the material we learned last week after that I told them about what we were going to learn that day which is “The hands of the blacks “. in this material I ask one of the students to read the story in the module book they already have, to make other students listen to the students who read me instructing other students to pay attention later I will show one of them to continue reading and with that, they also focus on reading and listening to their friends who read the story, after reading they will look for difficult vocabulary words
after reading the students must have questions about new vocabulary for them when they read the story earlier, to solve this problem I have prepared the difficult vocabulary words on a cartolina paper, and also prepared means that I told some students who want voluntary to come forward to search vocabulary is difficult for them and stick it on the board and its meaning.so not only read and listen to the teacher, but they can also be active in class and can better understand the vocabulary and quickly understand the vocabulary . after searching and knowing the vocabulary that is difficult for us to proceed to the discussion session, in this section I gave them an oral and figurative question that is still related to the lesson they had earned earlier and explained the purpose of the lesson. after that, I always give a quiz or assessment to my students, why? because it can help me know whether my students have understood the material that I provide or not, and can also reflect on the lesson. and at the end, I didn’t forget to give them homework or assignments so they have activities at home and also study at home with their parents or with their friends.

I read poetry to my students whose poetry is our learning material
I ordered one of my students to read a poem entitled “African Child ‘from Eku McGred

Time management and organizing activities

one subject only takes 60 minutes, usually, I spend 15 minutes, in the beginning, to ask about checking the attendance and greeting.
15 minutes later I usually immediately give out or display material that I will teach reading, display PowerPoint presentations, play videos, and so on
The next 15 minutes I ask students my students with oral questions and figurative questions
The final 15 minutes to instruct students to work on the quiz and in the final minutes give assignments to the students.

Problem-solving

when I teach Philippines history or culture in the Philippines i am very troubled here why because I am not from the Philippines but at that time my students also do not understand at a time like I was a little panicked at first but I try to divert the distress by saving questions which I cannot answer and I will answer in the next meeting, or can I explain questions that are difficult to understand in a cultural and historical perspective that may be somewhat similar in Indonesia so that I can easily explain them and they understand my explanations, and thankfully they can understand it well.

Classroom management

What do I do when there are students who are busy chatting with their peers ? or sleeping while you explain the learning material?

the answer is I will reprimand students who do not pay attention to me because in my opinion people who pay attention to it do not necessarily understand but do not pay attention,
the same as sleeping when explaining but I respect students who sleep more because maybe he agrees, even though sleep also he does not support teaching and learning activities at least I just wake up and pay attention again.

what if I teach too fast and still have time?
Usually, I give stories or knowledge of the similarities and differences between the Philippines and Indonesia or the history / cultural customs that exist in Indonesia. and sometimes I also give motivations to my students.

I divided the students into groups of students

Pedagogical Contents

Teaching methods of the teacher that you observed

when observing my mentor, my mentor uses many methods to teach students, he advised me to follow his way. he also told me that I had to be rather creative when bringing learning materials, if I could innovate to use tools other than learning modules, when I observed him I realized that my mentor relied more on visual eyes rather than being driven to the module/textbook, sometimes he also divides students into groups and then tells them to present the results of their group work.

My Mentor Dr. Eugene S. Lumasok

Their learning materials and innovation

mostly in English, they use more textbooks or modules but sometimes they also use an LCD projector. I was given a challenge by my mentor to present learning materials in a different style but students must understand with a new nature that is possible for them, I also agreed that I also use cartolina paper or Manila paper I put some new vocabulary that may be difficult to understand by them and I also translated the meaning too, then how do I present it, then I scrambled the difficult vocabulary with the meanings and then I invited the students to stick to the difficult vocabulary and the meaning on the board. so that’s how I made something that might not be new but I try not to rely on LCD projectors alone as my learning material. That is the goal of my mentor to challenge me so that when I teach in villages or in a place that lacks adequate facilities, I am used to making learning materials with only modest tools.

Authentic assessment used by the teachers

students are required to be active in class so that it can be assessed who are students who are active in class and who are not likely to be inactive in class because they do not understand or do not like these subjects. but when I teach at this school most of the students are very enthusiastic about answering their questions very enthusiastically, usually my mentor gives a lot of quizzes and assignments to his students almost every day so that anyone can understand the lessons that have been delivered and can better understand the lesson too.

First day of observation

Monday, 19 august 2019

on this very exciting day, even though it was raining continuously from the first day we came here but on the first day we observed no rain at all and we were able to carry out the flag ceremony comfortably after carrying out the principal’s flag ceremony from the secondary laboratory school Benguet state university Dr. Brenda B. Allay introduced us one by one. And the students were very enthusiastic when we did the introductions, and I tried to use the Tagalog / Filipino language I mentioned
umalika yo
come here all of you
then the students were confused and moved as if they were coming to me even though I meant asking how are you but I thought umalika yo means how are you but after I told my buddies he laughed and corrected him that umalika yo meant not asking how are you but that means come here all of you from there I will be more careful using the Filipino language haha.

Academic support system

one of the academic supporters at BSU especially for students of colleges of Teacher education

The BSU has two laboratory schools, the elementary laboratory school (ELS) and the secondary laboratory school (SLS). Both of these were connected with the College of Teacher’s Education of BSU.

The objectives of Benguet State University-Secondary Laboratory School (BSU-SLS) as follows:

Teaching system

the school started at 7.30 in the morning, followed by flag ceremony until 7.45 or 7.50. The class held every Monday to Friday, while Saturday and Sunday is holiday. in this school the teacher only teaches one course for one hour only while in my country (Indonesia) one subject takes 90 minutes. in this school there are many extracurricular there are takraw, ballet, music, football, basketball, badminton, volleyball and many and etc. The purpose of extracurricular activities for students to develop their talents or function to develop students’ abilities and sense of social responsibility.

Materials and other learning sources

in most schools usually use textbooks for their learning media and secondary laboratory schools including these schools, my supervisor told me to find and retrieve subject matter to be taught from the textbooks and textbook titles used by mentors and all their students are the voyages communication in English class 8.
Another learning source depends on the teacher, we can use many variant sources as long as that is related to the materials.my supervisor told me not only to give material verbally but to be assisted with visual eyes so that students could more easily understand what I was about to convey to them.We can use powerpoint presentation, picture , and the most favorite option my mentor give to me cartolina paper or manila paper.

Measurement and evaluation system

Every lesson plan that I make, I always make some quiz to the students to return the material that has been submitted and to be able to better understand the material that has been delivered and learn whether students understand what we have taught or who have understood. and don’t forget to also give assignments to students who receive practice and study at home

Curriculum

The BSU-SLS use the Department of Education K-12 curriculum in teaching. K-12 is an educational system from United States that covers the education from kindergarten (K) and 12 years of basic education (six years of primary/elementary education, four years of junior high school, and two years of senior high school). The goal of the implementation of K-12 is ti create a functional basic education system that will produce productive and responsible citizens equipped with the essential competencies and skills for both life – learning and employment. The BSU-SLS teachers still have their own discretion on the lessons. They might revise it or modify it to attain the target lessons per quarter.

Teaching plan

Semi Detail lesson plan

when I observe my teacher or mentor, I also observe the lesson plan that he recommends. he said that I didn’t need to make a detailed, detailed lesson plan. I make my lesson plan according to what my supervisor wants, from objectives, procedure preliminaries to presenting material to students, asking again what has been learned, giving quizzes, and also giving assignments.
My supervisor said that, I prefer to see you make the lesson plan less attractive but when you put it into practice when teaching is good I appreciate it more. even so I still provide the best lesson plan to my supervisor and also show a good performance when teaching
